Curiosity gets the better of you. You land on an AI chatbot site for the first time, and there it is: a blank box with a blinking cursor and the cheerful prompt “Ask me anything.”
But what? How? Can I break it somehow? Will it judge me if I say something weird? Should I start safe with “What are you good at?” or is that too obvious? Your fingers hover, heart doing a tiny flutter, and you finally type something—anything—and hit enter, half expecting genius, half expecting nonsense.
That little jolt of uncertainty? Almost everyone feels it. I explored to try to get to the root of why so many people stumble in their very first week.
If you talk to recent starters—whether ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, or any of the others—their stories follow the same arc: excitement, first attempt, confusion, and then either quiet abandonment or a sudden “aha.” The confusion almost always comes from three habits we carry over from older tools that simply don’t fit how these models work.
- Treating It Like Google
We’re conditioned to treat any text box as a search bar. So we type keyword salads—“best budget laptop 2026”—expecting links or shopping results. Instead, we get a long, synthesized paragraph that might be outdated, oddly opinionated, or just slightly off.
Search engines give sources. Language models give answers they’ve stitched together. When the stitching uses old thread, the whole thing can look strange.
- Asking Giant, Vague Questions
“Help me plan my career.” “Tell me about investing.” “Explain quantum physics.” The model obliges with pages of broad, generic text that rarely hits exactly what you needed. It’s like walking into a library and asking for “a book about life”—you’ll get something, but probably not the chapter you wanted.
The problem is boundaries. Without them, the model tries to cover everything and ends up useful for almost nothing specific.
- Trusting Every Word
The reply sounds confident, flows smoothly, tosses in precise-looking numbers. So we copy-paste and move on—until we realize the cited study doesn’t exist or the regulation quoted is years out of date.
Models are trained to sound authoritative even when guessing. They don’t have a native “I’m not sure” reflex unless we build one in.
The Fix
Two mindset shifts and two simple habits turn the whole experience around fast.
First, swap your mental model. Stop thinking “search engine” or “infallible oracle.” Start thinking “extremely knowledgeable but occasionally overconfident intern who really wants to help.” That reframing alone removes half the friction.
Second, use one of the model’s real superpowers: it’s excellent at teaching you how to use it. Especially early on, leave the door open for coaching. Add a short line like:
“I’m new to this. If there’s a better way to phrase my question, suggest it first, then answer.”
You’ll frequently get a quick lesson plus a much better response.
When accuracy matters, borrow the prompt-checking trick we covered a few columns back: after writing your question, add:
“Before answering, review this prompt for vagueness, missing constraints, or anything that might encourage hallucination. Suggest improvements if needed, then proceed.”
The model will often tighten it for you—sometimes catching risks you missed.
Add these habits, and most people flip from “this is pointless” to “how did I live without this?” in a single session.
