Exploring AI – The Language Tax

Some problems are not hard because the answer is far away. They are hard because the language we are using makes them expensive to think about.

That sounds abstract, so try this.

Remind yourself how to do long division. Not fun, but possible. Now imagine doing the same calculation using Roman numerals. The math did not change. The notation did.

But suddenly the task feels almost impossible.

That is the language tax.

Bad language makes the mind carry too much weight. Better language gives the mind better handles.

This is one of the quieter ways AI changes how people think. Not by giving us perfect answers. By giving us tighter language for ideas we were already trying to hold.

A good phrase can compress a whole mess of thought into something reusable.

“Hard requirement” and “soft preference” are better than “important stuff.”
“Proxy metric” is better than “the number we’re using that might not be the real thing.”
“Pass/fail test” is better than “how we know if it worked.”
“Failure mode” is better than “the way this might go wrong.”
“Cognitive overhead” is better than “the amount of mental effort the task consumes before we even start solving it.”

And better is here has a specific meaning – it takes less effort to think the same thing.

Once you have the phrase, you can reuse the distinction.

That matters.

A lot of thinking is not blocked by intelligence. It is blocked by overhead. The problem is too slippery, too wordy, or too tangled to hold clearly. Better language lowers the overhead enough that the problem becomes workable.

That is why repeated interaction with AI can change your vocabulary. You start picking up cleaner labels, sharper distinctions, and more efficient ways to frame messy ideas.

The danger is that some of that language is just jargon. It sounds smart but does not reduce the load.

The test is simple:

Does this phrase make the problem easier to think about, or only harder to explain to someone else?

Useful language reduces friction.

Useless language obscures meaning.

So this week, try this prompt:

Give me the cleanest language for the distinction I am trying to explain. Make it shorter, sharper, and easier to reuse. Then give me one plain-English example that proves the distinction matters.

That is one of the underrated uses of AI.

Not asking it to solve the problem.

Asking it to improve the language you are using to hold the problem in your head.

Because sometimes the next frontier is not a better answer.

Sometimes it is a better handle to hold the question with..
